Thank You to everyone who attended our meeting with ConAgra this past week. I think ConAgra did a great job presenting information about their FDP program and about Conagra as a company.

This Week
This weeks meeting is with the IRS and they will be presenting on careers with the IRS. The meeting is in room 320 at 6pm and the dress is business casual.

Announcements
-Please send your resumes in PDF format to Stephanie (svanicek@unomaha.edu) by Friday
the 18th. (That’s this Friday!) This is for the faculty part of the resume review. Each resume
will be reviewed by two different accounting faculty members. Please take advantage of this
opportunity. The accounting faculty are taking time out of their busy days to help you. This is a
great tool that requires little to no work on your part. We still need resumes from a majority of
you.
-Start thinking about whether or not you will be attending the Regional Meeting April 8-9 in
Lincoln. Please remember that you must be able to make both days of the meeting in order
to attend the meeting and receive the points. We will be asking for confirmations from those
who want to attend next week.
-Please sign up to attend the remaining tutoring sessions. You can do so here. There is plenty
of room left, and you can start signing up for up to two sessions now. Please take advantage of
this easy way to get your volunteer hours. Remember that you can count up to four tutoring
hours (two sessions) towards your six community service hour requirement.

Volunteer Opportunities
-VITA training will be held this Saturday (2/19) at the Mammel Hall computer lab at
1:30pm. If you are interested in coming, please e-mail Kurtis at kevon@unomaha.edu.
If you can't attend but still want to become certified to help prepare international student tax
returns, please also contact Kurtis.
-The Project Achieve event will be held this Thursday (2/17) at the Office of Multicultural
Affairs in the Milo Bail Student Center from 3pm-5pm. We will be answering questions UNO
students have in completing their 1040 EZ. If you are still interested in attending this event,
contact Kurtis.
-Remember you need 6 community service hours for the semester. Although you should strive
for more!

This Week
This weeks meeting is with ConAgra and will be held at the Conagra campus. You will need to park in the garage on ConAgra’s campus and the meeting will be held in building one on ConAgra drive. If you need a map it can be found here, and I have also attached the map to this e-mail.. The meeting starts at 5pm and please make sure to be on time. The dress for this meeting is business casual.

Please remember to dress according to the dress code we set for each meeting. Wearing jeans to our business casual events is not allowed. If you need some guidelines for dressing business casual you can find them here.

Thank You to everyone who attended last weeks meeting with the Career Center, Professor Ilcisin, and Dr. Kealey. I hope everyone learned something new and picked up some pointers and advice for your resumes. Here are a couple links to the information presented at the meeting.

This Week
This weeks meeting is a social event at the UNO Hockey Game. The game is this Friday, the 4th, at 7:37pm. Make sure you bring your Mav Card so you can get in for free. We will be sitting in section 113 and will try to save seats for everyone. Make sure you find one of the officers to sign in to get your points. Also, if you have not paid your dues yet you will need to pay them at the game, as they were due last week. Lastly, since this is a Beta Alpha Psi sponsored event there is no drinking allowed, even if you are of age.

The ConAgra meeting is in two weeks (February 11th) If you are not planning on attending please e-mail Stephanie (svanicek@unomaha.edu) by Saturday, the 5th, at the latest.
The resume due dates have been set and are February 18th for the first round and April 1st for the second round. Please send them to Stephanie at svanicek@unomaha.edu in PDF format only.
The first tutoring session is this coming Sunday, the 6th, in room 122 for Accounting 2020. If you want to tutor you need to sign up here, as there are limited spots. Remember up to 4 hours of tutoring can count toward your community service hours for the semester.

Friend of BAP
This semester we are going to implement Friend of BAP as a way for candidates to be able to get to know other members by giving them a mentor for the semester. Candidates, if you have any questions about BAP you should go to your Friend of BAP listed on the spreadsheet here. For the veteran members who are participating in Friend of BAP we are asking that you contact your Friend via e-mail to introduce yourself and make them feel at home. We would also like you to make an effort to sit with them at the hockey game this week.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Semester Kick-Off. The BAP officers were impressed with the number and quality of candidates, and we hope all of you continue taking the required steps to complete initiation. The meeting this Friday will be a presentation on resumes, information about internships, and information about the MAcc program. The meeting will be in room 320 and the dress is business casual. After Friday all members and candidates should have enough information to begin preparing a resume.

The Hockey game next week (February 4th) puck drop is 7:37pm.
Members need 100 points, candidates need 110.
Don’t forget! Your membership dues of $30 are due this Friday (the 28th) and you can give them to Nathan White. If you pay with a check please make it payable to Beta Alpha Psi.
Please make sure you are on time to all meetings. As outlined in the handbook, if you show 5 minutes or later to any meeting you will not receive points for that meeting. Our meetings are with professional companies and accounting firms and it reflects poorly on you and Beta Alpha Psi to show up late. Many of the people presenting at these meetings are recruiters and are your potential interviewers.
If anyone is interested in signing up for the CPA letter daily you can do so here (http://www.smartbrief.com/cpa/). The CPA letter daily is offered by the AICPA, and is a free daily digest of the day’s 10-12 top business, finance and accounting articles. Thank you to everyone who made the trip down to Lincoln for our meeting with BKD. I hope everyone enjoyed the presentation and learned a little more about BKD.

What's Happening This Week

This week our meeting is with Becker. The rep from Becker will be going over the CPA exam changes for 2011 and it will be a great time to ask any questions you have about the CPA exam or the review course that Becker offers. We also be making some changes to our handbook at the beginning of the meeting. The meeting will start at 6pm in the auditorium and the dress code will be business casual.

Announcements

If you are planning on attending the banquet (candidates are required to attend in order to become members) you need to give your meal choice to Nick Jasa and $30 to Brittney Nichols by December 3rd. By providing a meal choice, you are confirming your attendance at the banquet.
There are only 2 tutoring sessions left! The remaining two tutoring sessions are this coming Sunday, November 21 from 2-4pm and December 5 from 2-4pm both in Mammel Hall room 122.
Don’t forget to turn your service hours into Devin as soon as possible. All members and candidates need to complete 6 volunteer hours, 2 of which need to be from a tutoring session.
The points list is updated for all members and candidates. Volunteer hours and tutoring hours are now listed in the last two columns. Members need to have 105 points and candidates need to have 115 points. There are only 4o available points left this semester.

Thank you to everyone who attended and helped out at the accounting alumni reception this past week. I think the alumni really enjoyed their tours and appreciated us being there. I hope everyone also got a chance to network with the alumni.

What's Happening This Week

This week is our volunteer night and it will be a great opportunity to get your community service hours in. All members and candidates are required to have 6 hours of community service, 2 hours of which have to be from tutoring. If you are planning on going to the Open Door Mission for volunteer night, you need to e-mail Devin ASAP to let her know you will be there because there are only 3 spots left. If you are attending the Open Door Mission you will need to be there from 4pm-7pm (2828 North 23rd Street East). The other volunteer opportunity for Friday is painting pictures for the Children’s Hospital. The location has changed for this event and we will be meeting in the U Mo Ho room of the Student Center at 6pm. If you have any other questions about volunteer night or getting your volunteer hours in, please e-mail Devin (dtierney@unomaha.edu).

Week of 10/18/10

Members & Candidates

I hope everyone enjoyed their fall break. We have a lot of events, meetings, and volunteer opportunities approaching so make sure you are checking your e-mail and staying up-to-date on what is going on.

What's Happening This Week

This weeks meeting is the accounting alumni reception, and you should have all received information on this last week. If not, here’s a refresher. We will be meeting in room 320 at 4:30pm. We will start giving tours around 4:45, and each tour should last about ten minutes. The tours will end at 5:30pm and we then will have time to talk with the accounting alumni. The reception ends at 6:30 and you will be free to go after that. Alcohol will be served at this reception. Please refrain from consuming alcohol even if you are of legal age. Alcohol on campus is a privilege that we don't want to risk losing for CBA.

Announcements

We will be doing a yard clean up for the elderly this saturday (the 23rd) We will meet at the Westside Community Center (108th and Giles) at 8:30 AM and get our assignment from there. Plan to work until about noon. Wear old clothes you can get dirty. Supplies will be provided. RSVP to Devin ASAP if you will be attending this (dtierney@unomaha.edu).
Volunteer night is next week (the 29th) and you should have received information on this today. If not, here’s another refresher. As of now there are two different events, the open door mission and painting pictures for the Children’s hospital. If you are planning to serve dinner at the open door mission the first ten people to RSVP to Devin will need to meet there (2828 North 23rd Street East) from 4-7pm. Everyone else who is attending volunteer night will meet at UNO at 6pm to paint pictures. If you have any other questions contact Devin.
The next tutoring session is for ACCT 2010 and is Oct. 24th from 2:00 to 4:00 in Mammel Hall Rm 121.

Thanks to everyone who attended our meeting last Friday with KPMG. We had great participation and interaction from both our members and candidates with the firm. I hope everyone got a better idea of what it is like to work for KPMG and a little better insight into the world of public accounting. We had 41 members and candidates attend.

What's Happening This Week

This weeks meeting will be with Northwestern Mutual and it will be located in Mammel Hall Room 113 and the topic will be on Northernwestern Mutuals internship program and the soft skills needed in the business world. Dress will be business casual.

Announcements

Glifford Park Community Garden is getting a makeover and needs volunteers to clean up their children's garden areas. You have an opportunity to come down this Saturday from 10am to 3pm and volunteer. They need all the help they can get as long as you're willing work! They will provide light refreshments. The park is located at 3416 Cass St. For further information, contact Natasha Fields (nfields@unomaha.edu) or Dana Freeman (850-9611).
The following week is fall break so we will not be meeting on October 15.

Thank you to everyone who attended our meeting with Lutz & Co. last Friday. I hope everyone enjoyed our first off-site professional meeting and learned a lot about Lutz & Co. and their LOAN program. This meeting was a great opportunity to network with other members and candidates as well as some professionals.

What's Happening Next Week

The KPMG meeting this Friday will be in Mammel Hall Room 320 and the dress is business casual. The topic will be on the benefits of public accounting as a career choice. For graduate students, this is the same night as Dean Pol's Welcome Party. The KPMG meeting should be over by 8:00 allowing you to attend the Dean's Welcome Party, which is supposed to run until 10:00.

Devin has planned a yard clean-up for elderly citizens on October 23rd, this is a great opportunity to get your volunteer hours in and meet more of your fellow members of BAP.

Thank you to everyone who attended the meeting with Seim Johnson on Friday night. Last Friday’s meeting gave the candidates exposure to the structure of a professional meeting. The other officers and I were impressed by the professionalism of all who attended.

This Friday we will be meeting with Lutz & Co. at 6:00 at their new office. This will be an exciting experience as we will be the first chapter to see their new digs, and they are very excited to have us! Directions to their office can be found on our Facebook page or at unobap.com. The topic will be on the Lutz LOAN (Lutz Offers Assistance to Not-for-Profits) program, a creative solution they developed due to the economic downturn last year. Dress code is business casual for this Friday’s meeting.

BAP Members are eligible for a Full Becker Professional Education CPA Exam Review Scholarship! To be qualified you must have met the CPA Exam requirements by graduation in 2011 and plan to sit for the CPA Exam within one year of graduation. You can apply here to be considered for a scholarship. Applications must be submitted by October 3, 2010. Winners will be notified by e-mail or phone on or before October 29, 2010.
Starting September 14th, Beta Alpha Psi will hold the first-ever AICPA Accounting Competition. Student teams will have an opportunity to apply their accounting and sustainability smarts to solve a real-world business problem for a real-world client – plus the potential to take home $10,000 and a trip to NYC for a networking lunch with industry insiders. As Devin mentioned earlier, the Habitat for Humanity event with Deloitte has been cancelled. But there will be other ways to accumulate those community service hours, including attending the 9th annual Omaha Metro Area Buddy Walk for the National Down Syndrome Society, Saturday, October 9th at 10 AM at UNO's Campus. Devin is also planning a yard clean-up for elderly citizens on October 23rd, and our volunteer night is October 29th.

Thanks for making Meet the Firms a great success. We had 60 members and candidates meeting with 17 firms and agencies from around the Omaha area. The other officers and I were very impressed with the effort everyone made in trying to meet with every table possible.

This Friday we will be meeting with Seim Johnson in our auditorium (room 113) at 6:00 pm. The topic will be on fraud in today's economy. Dress code is business casual for this Friday’s meeting. Food will be provided and we will have our election for Reporting Officer after Seim Johnson's presentation.

The 9th annual Omaha Metro Area Buddy Walk for the National Down Syndrome Society will be Saturday, October 9th at 10 AM at UNO's Campus. You can earn volunteer hours by participating in the walk or by simply showing up and cheering on the walkers. If you're interested you can find out more information at their website here .
Kaplan and CPAexcel are still looking for Campus Reps. This is a great way to get a free CPA review course. Please let me (jbright@unomaha.edu) know if you're interested and I can send you their contact information.
Nebraska State Board of Public Accountancy and the Education Advisory Committee will host Dr. Craig Mills, AICPA Exam Director, on Friday, Oct. 15, 2010 at Mammel Hall. Dr. Mills will present at 9:00 am, and a question-and-answer session will follow his remarks at 10:00 am. The topic will be the CPA Exam including exam content, IFRS, simulations, among other changes effective January 1, 2011. Please RSVP to Darryl Burgdorf, UNO Accounting Department Secretary, at dburgdorf@unomaha.edu by September 17th.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Semester Kick-Off and Candidate Orientation. The BAP officer staff was impressed with the number and quality of candidates, and we hope all of you continue taking the required steps to complete initiation. Our next meeting is our Meet the Firms event to be held in the Mammel Hall Atrium next Friday, September 10th. Have all your resumes sent to me (jbright@unomaha.edu) by the end of today. We will be meeting in the Mammel Hall Auditorium (room 113) at 6:00 PM and you will be released throughout the Atrium after we have verified that we've received your dues. In addition, we are still looking for volunteers for Tuesday's Dunk the Dean philanthropy event for the Omaha Child Saving Institute being put on by the Student Marketing Association. Let Josh Hick (jhick@unomaha.edu) know as soon as you can if you would like to participate.

Hopefully all of those who attended Union Pacific this past Friday gained further experience and knowledge about accounting in a corporate setting. Union Pacific’s internal auditing team had great information and insight for those who are interested in a career in the corporate world.

What’s Happening

Take the next couple of weeks to put the finishing touches on your resumes. The resume workshop is around the corner. Also, continue to think about regionals. We will have about 4 people presenting, but we need help from as many of you as we can in order to assemble a quality presentation. All of those who are interested in being involved should contact Clark to receive further details. Those who wish to attend the regional meeting for April 3-4 should sign up online as soon as possible.

This past week was a great opportunity to fulfill some of the service hour requirements. Hopefully all of those in attendance had a great time! We received great feedback from not only members, but from those we were able to help as well.

What’s Happening

VITA community service sessions are March 5, March 12, March 27 and April 2. Do not forget to complete the online exam, print off a certificate, and turn them into Jenifer Stahl in RH 241 by March 2^nd. You may sign up for sessions when you turn your certificate or by e-mail if you have not done so. To receive the service hours from the training session you must complete one session of tax return preparation.

We are beginning to put together our regional presentation. All of those who are interested in being involved should contact Clark Ruby to receive further details. Those who wish to attend the regional meeting for April 3-4 should sign up online.

Thanks once again to all of those who attended the meeting with ConAgra this past Friday. Hopefully everyone was able to gain knowledge and information about the accounting department in a corporate setting. This was the first BAP meeting during this semester with a firm other than a public accounting firm. For those of you who were unable to attend and want to find out more about a corporate accounting environment there will be other chances throughout the semester to do so.

What’s Happening

VITA community service sessions are March 5, March 12, March 27 and April 2. Do not forget to complete the online exam, print off a certificate, and turn them into Jenifer Stahl in RH 241 by March 2nd. You may sign up for sessions when you turn your certificate. To receive the service hours from the training session you must complete one session of tax return preparation.

The last deadline for membership dues was February 20. If you have not paid or have not contacted Renee about paying, you will not be able to participate in BAP this semester.
It is time to complete resumes. SUBMIT RESUMES BY EMAIL TO CONNER HOLT at http://www.blogger.com/Local%20Settings/Temp/crholt@mail.unomaha.eduby February 27th. He will be delivering them to the accounting faculty for review.
There is another 201 tutoring opportunity this Sunday at 4pm in RH 204
If you want to be involved with our regionals project, we will be meeting Sunday from 230pm-330pm in RH 204. Community services hours will be awarded for participation.

Also, the meeting time has changed. ConAgra would like us to arrive at 5:30pm to meet some of their finance/acct employees before the meeting begins. For some members, arriving downtown by 5:30pm may not be feasible. If this is the case, please try to make it as soon as possible. Points will still be awarded if you arrive as late as 5:50pm.

Thanks to all of those members and initiates who attended this past meeting with Deloitte. I know the Deloitte representatives were very impressed with the number of members and initiates who attended. It was noted by several Deloitte professionals that this was the largest attendance they have ever seen at a Deloitte hosted Beta Alpha Psi meeting. Deloitte did an outstanding job presenting IFRS and answering whatever questions people may have had. I hope everyone enjoyed our first off-site professional meeting. It was a great opportunity to network with other members and initiates as well as some professionals. Remember for these off-campus meetings it is important to recall the professional dress attire as we are entering professional offices.

As always, many exciting things are going on in Beta Alpha Psi. Next Friday’s meeting is our first opportunity to meet with a firm this semester, and we want to make sure everyone understands the professional nature of the meeting. Deloitte has invited us to their downtown office, which is located in the First National Tower. It is important to remember that we are entering a professional business environment, and your behavior will represent both our organization and our university. Dress code is business professional; make sure you are dressed appropriately for the circumstances.

Beta Alpha Psi held its first 201 tutoring session on Sunday, and it was a success. We would like to thank all members that helped out. To all initiates, remember you have to attend at least one tutoring session this semester. You still have plenty of opportunities, but make sure you are planning your schedule accordingly. The next tutoring opportunity is this Sunday at 6:00pm in Roskens Hall room 202.

Thank You to everyone who attended the Semester Kick-Off. The BAP officers were impressed with the number and quality of initiates, and we hope all of you continue taking the required steps to complete initiation. Several BAP activities are coming up, and it is important to plan your schedules appropriately. The next meeting this upcoming Friday (January 30th) will be a resume presentation along with information about internships, the MACC program and CPA exam. After Friday all members and initiates should have enough information to begin preparing a resume. DO NOT wait until a week before the first due date to start working on your resume. It is important to begin now.

201 Tutoring

The first 201 tutoring session is February 1st from 2:00 to 4:00 PM, due to the Super Bowl. This is a good opportunity to review your accounting knowledge, receive community service hours, and help out aspiring accountants. It will be held in Roskens Hall, the exact room will be announced later this week. Remember, all members are required to attend at least one tutoring session. We hope everyone enjoyed the meeting with John Nunez about criminal investigation in the accounting world. The semester is quickly winding down, and we only have a few meetings left. This Friday we will be having elections for the officer positions for next semester. Everyone’s vote is important, as the elected officers are the future of this chapter. Nominees need to accept or decline the position and prepare a short speech explaining why they should be elected for the position.

As everyone knows, school is picking up and the first round of tests is here. It is important that we devote a proper amount of time to our academic obligations. There are also many exciting things coming up with BAP.

Bill Conley will be our guest speaker on Friday. He will be discussing his business and community experience and the important role it has played in his personal and professional development. Bill is an adjunct faculty member in the College of Business and was recently name Vice Chancellor of Business and Finance.

Community service is a very important part of our professional development. As you will see, community service will be just as important in your professional careers as it is during your academic careers.

Additionally, we will be electing a new Treasurer after the meeting on Friday. If you were nominated on the website, please contact Carley to accept or decline your nomination. Although everyone is allowed to attend the election, only members are allowed to vote.

Next Semester

A significant number of officers and members will not be in the organization next year. It is the responsibility of the new initiates, members, and officers to maintain the quality of the organization. This entails professionalism, academic performance, and the social skills to attract the brightest of the next class. With next semester’s officers, we don’t see that being a problem.

Two short weeks until finals; we hope everyone is vehemently preparing for the big day. Beta Alpha Psi is hosting an ethics discussion this Friday night. Dr. Lewis will be guiding a discussion in the MBSC, and it should be an interesting event. Reliance on accounting information is becoming increasingly important; especially with the global dependence on efficient capital markets. As accountants, we must keep in mind our underlying ethical obligations to the public. One key to doing that is to understand what those obligations are. Come to the discussion on Friday to consider these issues.

The final tutoring session is Sunday, April 27^th. It will be held in Roskens Hall Room 201. If you don’t have your community service obligations complete, then attendance is strongly recommended. Remember that you must complete at least one hour of tutoring!

Banquet

The banquet will be Friday, May 2^nd. Make sure to RSVP with your meal choice and guest (if applicable). RSVP’s should be sent to Carley, cdhunzeker@mail.unomaha.edu. All initiates are required to attend. The cost is $25, and checks should be given to Leslie before the banquet.

Finals are rapidly approaching. We hope all aspiring accountants are staying on top of the books. Beta Alpha Psi has multiple events in the coming weeks. The Firm Resume Review Night is Friday, April 18th at 6:00 PM. This event will take place in the auditorium on the bottom floor of Roskens Hall. If your resume is not perfect, then be very cognizant of the employer’s suggestions. These are the same people we will be interviewing with next year.

Habitat for Humanity will be Saturday April 19th. The event will begin at 8:15 AM at the North Omaha Habitat site. The weather is still unpredictable (as we saw this Saturday), so be prepared. Remember, community service is a crucial part of our organization.

Another week finished, and the weather is beginning to improve. Unfortunately for us accountants, enjoying nice weather is difficult right now. Beta Alpha Psi has several important events this week, so make sure you plan accordingly.

Elections will be held on Friday, April 11^th, in the Milo Bail Student Center. The dress code is casual. We hope everyone attends, because we are choosing next semester’s leadership. Unless you have extenuating circumstances, please attend. The nominations are posted on the bulletin board and on the website. Each candidate should prepare a brief speech stating why they are running for the position, their qualifications, etc.

We will be hosting a community service event on Saturday, April 12^th. Everyone should be at Elmwood Park by 10:00 AM to clean up the area. Meet at the playground. The community service will go until 12:30 then we will be having a BBQ. This is a great chance to fulfill your community service obligations, to socialize with members from the Lincoln chapter, and to get some free food.

The 201 tutoring session will be the following evening (Sunday, April 13) in Room 201 of Roskens Hall. Anyone available should attend; the 201 students typically have lots of questions.

We don’t have a meeting this Friday, so everyone enjoy the night off. However, the following week there are multiple events. We will be holding elections on Friday, April 11 in the MBSC Dodge Room. Attendance is important; we are choosing our future leadership.

Welcome Back! Spring Break is over, and it is time to go back to work. Luckily, Beta Alpha Psi has several exciting events to break the monotony of the school week. On Thurday, March 27^th, BAP will be having two recruiting events in the downtown area. BKD will be hosting an open house at the Upstream Brewing Company in the Old Market starting at 6:00 PM. BKD is a regional CPA firm with offices both here and in Lincoln. Also, Exxon Mobil will be having a recruiting event at the same time at the Old Mattress Factory, which is located one block west of the Qwest Center downtown. The two events are only a few blocks apart, so you should be able to stop at both. Dress code for both events is casual.

Exxon Mobil will also be hosting our professional meeting on Friday, March 28^th. It will be held in the MBSC Dodge Room at 6:00 PM. The dress code is business professional, so plan accordingly. Exxon is sending representatives from Houston to speak to us; this is a chance to get exposure to business opportunities outside of the Omaha area. They will be discussing Career Development.

Officer Nominations

It is time to begin the officer nomination process for next semester. Nominations for positions should be turned in by Thursday, April 3^rd. Please email your nominations to me at pbarackman@mail.unomaha.edu. To all initiates, the purpose of this process is to identify potential future leaders of the organization. Those nominated should have demonstrated ability to deal with the responsibilities of their proposed position. If you know someone that you believe could improve BAP, then nominate them for an office.

One week until Spring Break! I hope everyone has enjoyed the first half of the Spring ‘08 semester. Beta Alpha Psi provided multiple opportunities for professional development thus far, and will continue to do so throughout the semester. With that said, the next few weeks are a little slower. We all get the opportunity to rest up for the big push to finals.

The only major upcoming event is the VITA tax community service session. The next service date is March 20^th; if you have gone through the VITA training you should have all of the details regarding the activity. Any questions should be directed to Mary Schawang at mschawang@mail.unomaha.edu.

The next 202 tutoring session is March 23. This is the last Sunday of Spring Break, so it may be easy to forget. Mark your calendars. As always, it will be in Roskens Hall at 4:00 PM. Remember, everyone must attend at least one tutoring session. It is a small commitment, but is an important part of our organization.

Spring Break is almost here; soon we will have our chance to catch up on our studies, or our sleep. However, before the break BAP has several important events. The First Data/Institute of Internal Auditors meeting is Thursday, March 6^th. It will be held in the Milo Bail Student Center’s Dodge Room (Third Floor). If you plan on attending and have not sent an RSVP, then does so immediately. This meeting is a great opportunity to learn about another career path for accountants. Also, First Data has recently been in the national headlines regarding a major private buyout. If you are interested in financial markets, then this company may be of interest to you.

Union Pacific has invited us to their downtown office on Friday, March 7^th. They are located at 1416 Dodge St; the meeting starts at 6:00 PM. Dress is business professional; remember, we have been invited to their office, let’s make sure we match their professionalism. They will be discussing technology in accounting.

I hope everyone was inspired by the motivational speech of Phil at our last meeting. All attendees of Friday’s meeting received lots of good insight regarding the CPA exam. BAP has several important events this week. Resumes are due by February 29, so be sure to be working on your resume. If you have not sent an RSVP for the FIRST DATA meeting on Thursday March 6^th, then please do so as soon as possible. Also, the second 201 tutoring session will be held on Sunday March 2^nd, Roskens Hall room 201. Tutoring is a great way to receive community service hours; remember everyone is required to attend at least one tutoring session.

This Friday, February 29, we will be having a Chapter Meeting in the Milo Bail Student Center. This meeting will just be for Beta Alpha Psi; no firms will be attending. These meetings give us an opportunity to discuss the organization and coordinate future activities. Attendance is important, because all members and initiates will have an opportunity to bring feedback or ideas to the organization. Dress code is casual.

Mid-semester Feedback

The officers of Beta Alpha Psi would like to make sure everyone understands the policies of the organization. BAP is designed to help guide college students in their transition to the professional world. The rules of our organization are designed to mirror standard practices in the business world. With that said, our policies regarding dress code and tardiness must be adhered to. The professional image of the entire organization is diluted when people do not follow the rules. A lot of exciting things are going on this week for Beta Alpha Psi. This Friday we are having a CPA Review Night. It is a great opportunity to learn about the requirements, as well as the process, for becoming a CPA. We will be meeting in Roskens Hall room 404; please note this is different than the original schedule. If you are unsure about your desire to become a CPA, then this is a great way to get your questions answered. If you are sure that the CPA is for you, then this can help you organize your strategy for passing the exams.

What’s Happening

On Thursday, March 6 we will be hosting First Data/Institute of Internal Auditors. This meeting will be located in the MBSC on the third floor. This is not a typical Friday night meeting, so we need to get an idea of potential attendance. If you plan on attending, then please RSVP with me at pbarackman@mail.unomaha.edu by March 1.

As everyone knows, school is picking up and the first round of tests is right around the corner. It is important that we devote a proper amount of time to our academic obligations. However, we must not forget our obligations to Beta Alpha Psi. Last Friday’s meeting gave all initiates exposure to the structure of a professional meeting. The officers of BAP were impressed by your professionalism. We would like to stress the importance of punctuality, though. Being punctual shows respect to the host firm, and it prepares you to be punctual for interviews and other business opportunities. Additionally, make sure to put your phones on silent during the meetings.

We have another professional meeting this Friday (February 15). National Indemnity will be speaking at the Milo Bail Student Center (Dodge Room, 3^rd Floor). This meeting allows us to branch out of our traditional focus on public accounting. The dress code is business casual, and everyone should be prepared with questions regarding the insurance industry.

What’s Happening

VITA community service training will be held on Friday, February 22 at 1:00 PM. Training will be in the Arts and Sciences Building room 216. If you plan on participating in the VITA service, then attend the training. You will find the work difficult if you do not attend.

Welcome back. The spring 2008 semester is now underway, and it should be an exciting semester for BAP. Our semester will begin formally with the Members Meeting on January 18 at 6:00 PM. As usual, BAP will provide opportunities for professional development, social networking, and general knowledge of the accounting profession.

What to Expect in 2008:
The spring semester is going to focus on resume preparation. All BAP members and initiates will have an opportunity to create, revise, and perfect a resume. BAP will also host several professional meetings giving members the opportunity to meet representatives from Deloitte, Union Pacific, Exxon Mobile and many other companies. Furthermore, we are planning multiple community service opportunities.

Friday, is the Banquet. The dress code is Business Professional. Many individuals will be attending the banquet; each of you, various firms and faculty members. We formally initiate new members into the chapter and recognize our graduating seniors.

DUTIES OF CHAPTER OFFICERS

Section 2. Duties of Officers

A. The officers of the society shall be: President, Faculty Vice-President, Vice-President, Reporting Officer, Treasurer, Vice-President of Community Relations, Membership Chair, and Info Technology Officer.

B. The President calls and presides at meetings of the chapter and of the executive committee; appoints such committees as the constitution bylaws, or vote of the chapter shall provide; determines that all reporting responsibilities and other duties of the Vice-President, Reporting Officer, and Treasurer are performed in accordance with the National Constitution Bylaws; and seeks to promote the welfare of the chapter and the society generally.

C. The Faculty Vice-President serves as the advisor to the chapter.

D. The Vice-President assists the President in the performance of prescribed duties and acts in the President's place in the event of absence or incapacity. The Vice-President is responsible for the Semester Kick-Off, Meet the Firms Night, and the planning of the Initiation Banquet.

E. The Vice-President of Community Relations shall obtain publicity for the chapter, maintain the accounting library, be the custodian of the chapter banner, and coordinate the VITA program.

F. The Reporting Officer records the minutes of the chapter and the executive committee meetings; transmits to the Director of Chapter Activities a completed member data request form for initiates, accompanied by a remittance for the initiation fees; transmits to the Director of Chapter Activities a list of chapter offices; prepares and transmits such other reports required by the Board and the Program for Chapter Activities; and fulfills all other duties ordinarily associated with the office of the Reporting Officer.

H. The Treasurer collects money owed to the chapter, disburses for authorized purposes, maintains appropriate financial records, and arranges for the audit and preparation of the tax return.

I. The Membership Chair shall maintain a current and alumni list of members, prepare a list of prospective members for each initiation ceremony, and carefully screen all applications. In addition, the Membership Chair will monitor the points accumulated by members and initiates.
